Global Drum Circles
Drum Journal

This is a beautiful poem Ariadna wrote, thank you!

People from near and far.
Gather around in a delineated circle.
Soft lights illuminate their hands.
Lively tapping on indigenous drums.
Colorful, neutral and of diverse shapes.
Blended origins sharing one space.
David leads the pace, from center stage.
Creatively crafting avid tunes.
High and low, fast and slow.
Left and right, goes the tempo.
Waves of love dance and repair.
As happy music fills-up the air.
Crystal bowls heavenly vibrations.
Blissfully attuning their core.
Many hearts drumming in rhythm.
Echoing the circle's rapport.
Contagious healing energy flows everywhere.
According with this meditative song.
Even the flute sings along.
Mixed sounds and harmonious souls.
Collectively playing their roles.
Everyone present feels grateful.
Blessed beyond, for this moment of unity.
Sacred and rare, truly one of a kind.
In their essence remains divine.

I awoke from a dream last night that gave me a new perspective.

In my dream, I was angry...I began drumming to release the anger that I didn't even know I was still holding on to. The drumming went on for a while until my racing heartbeat awakened me.... I felt lighter.

Drumming was somehow the language that let my body "shout out” the things I couldn’t find the words to express.

Drumming is usually a meditative and joyful activity for me, but I realized that drumming is also a powerful way to release emotions and shift feelings that no longer serve me.

Recently I attended a drum circle from Toby Christensen, and he said, we can “give back to mother earth” the things that we are not, by drumming whatever we want to let go of back into the earth... and then let the earth’s heartbeat vibration fill us up again, with the real “genius” of who we want to be.

In my Health Rhythm training with Christine Stevens, we worked on “drumming out” how we feel in the moment.

I'm so inspired with all of the opportunities I've had to bring drumming to more and more people.

This month I lead my second drum circle for recovering stroke and severe brain injury patients at Good Samaratin Hospital. I'll never forget the first drum circle I did with this amazing group when a doctor and her patient approached me afterwards. She was in tears and she asked her patient to tell me what he had just told her. He said "this was the first time since my stroke that I had forgotten about having this infliction".  From this point on, I promised to continue working with this group each year because I saw how profound shifts like this could happen. The part that amazes me is that the patients with use of only half their limbs are the most excited and enthusiastic drummers. This group is an ongoing inspiration to me... their courage, wisdom and spirit amaze me.  Many thanks to Dr. Manaz Motayar for her vision and to the Peninsula Stroke Foundation for their support.

The next day, I had the pleasure of leading a drum circle for 70 doctors, nurses and clinical staff at conclusion of a 7-week training to open Kaiser Santa Clara's first in-patient psychiatric hospital.  I've been part of a program called "Rhythms of Wellness" to bring music as a stress-reducer for staff and patients over the last 3 years. This drum circle was about team-building for this important new hospital. I can clearly say that passion and excitement were the words that express most what I felt from this group. The new center opened early last week and is beautiful!   Many thanks to Mimi Belser and Diane Gamburg for the vision.

.... More to come on my thoughts and experiences about leading my first all-women's drum circle at Harmony Birth and Family in Campbell, and producing the second Global Heart Concert.
